As a pet nutritionist, I understand all too well the plethora of choices available when feeding your beloved pet.  Moreover, if you are taking the time to read this article, chances are you’re a pet parent already dedicated to the concept of providing excellent nutrition for your dog.

Although feeding a high-quality food is essential, many pet owners are unaware of the benefits of a rotational diet for their dogs.  Imagine if you just ate one type of food, day in, and day out…would you find it satisfying or provide you with complete nutrition for your overall wellbeing?  The same is true for your pet. By introducing your dog to a variety of proteins and textures (dry and wet) can promote overall health within his/her various biological systems. Below are some key benefits to a rotational diet:

  • Helps develop and maintain a robust gastrointestinal system
  • Exposure to different proteins can increase dietary tolerance and promote different ratios of essential nutrients, such as amino acids
  • By feeding both dry and wet food (or a combination of the two) increases the benefits of taste variety and helps support a resilient immune system
  • Aids with food intolerances and reduces the chances of developing food allergies which facilitates a healthy digestive system

All of these attributes of rotational feeding are great, but I must warn pet parents the key to this being beneficial is to introduce the new food gradually to your pet.  This transition to a new diet should be done in stages, so both the stomach and intestines can get acclimated.

I specifically formulated D.O.G. food to be a highly digestive diet and as a true rotational feeding system.  By keeping the protein levels consistent and the underlying ingredients (the fruits and vegetables certified for organic use and the chelated vitamins and minerals) the same, your pet can partake of the various proteins and curb digestive issues.

As pet food science and consumer requests are moving toward more humanized nutrition for pets, the need for ingredient quality and dietary variety, which both optimize pet health, have taken on a new significance.  A rotational feeding system and a super premium food like D.O.G. meets both those benchmarks.  As always, you can contact me with pet nutrition questions through “Ask Dr. Johnson” on the D.O.G. website.
